The other very important job is that the crown protects the water from seeping into brick and mortar. The masonry absorbs water which can cause problems, especially the freeze-thaw effect whereas the bricks can expand with the freezing water and then thaw which may cause cracking.

Chimney Cap

The chimney cap is a roof-like structure that sits on top of the opening of your chimney. The main function of the cap is to prevent rain, snow, small animals, and debris from getting in. The cap also allows smoke and other fumes to leave the chimney. A cap that is correctly installed and sized appropriately should shield the opening of the flue. It should not be bent, show signs of deterioration, or be twisted. The chimney cap keeps water from the inside of the chimney.

Chimney Cover

A chimney cover is a component that usually sits on top of a prefabricated or factory-built chimney. It can be made out of stainless steel, copper, metal, or any other corrosion-resistant material. It is constructed to mimic the shape of the chimney crown. It acts as a barrier to the weather and protects the top of the chimney.
